A quarry crew here dug up a 5-million-year-old world
In 1996, workers at the Pipe Creek Junior limestone quarry near Swayzee broke into an ancient sinkhole sealed under glacial till — preserving a 5-million-year-old wetland complete with fossil rhinos, bears, and camels. It's one of the most important fossil sites in the eastern U.S., and it was found by people doing our kind of work. You genuinely never know what's under Indiana dirt.
Gas City grew 2,000% in two years — then the gas ran out
Platted on farmland in 1888 during the Trenton Field gas boom, Gas City exploded and then busted by 1902. Matthews once had eleven glass factories. That boom-and-bust cycle left behind aging buildings, buried foundations, and abandoned wells — the kind of sites where careful demolition and site prep earn their keep.
The Mississinewa was straightened, then dammed
The Mississinewa River through Marion was heavily channelized over the years, and the Army Corps built the Mississinewa dam in 1967 for flood control. Old floodplains don't forget, though — drainage and grading near the river have to account for where the water historically went.
Limestone close to the surface changes the dig
Grant County sits on Silurian limestone bedrock under its glacial till — the same rock that formed the Pipe Creek sinkhole. Shallow rock and karst features complicate septic fields and foundations, which is why honest soil evaluation and test digging come before any quote we put a number on.
